Water Therapy/ Special Needs

Coach: Shane

Surfing in the Ocean can be very therapeutic for kids with Special Needs. It can help to improve sensory integration, balance, coordination and flexibility. We have noticed improvements in self esteem and increased self confidence. Surfing can be very challenging yet rewarding, as it integrates both the fine and gross motor function.

ABA therapy can be applied to surfing instruction when needed or applicable

Currently, Shane Lovell is our head coach and responsible for coaching our kids with special needs. Shane is CPR/First Aide Certified and PART-R trained. He has 15 years experience coaching children with Down Syndrome, sensory motor delays, and mild/moderate and severe autism. He can apply ABA if and when needed, but typically in this environment he is using his experience to create a loving, accepting, fun and meaningful relationship with the surfer. The primary objective is to build trust in order for the environment to become conducive to surfing. The water, ocean, and waves create the therapeutic journey for the surfer.
