This is the perfect opportunity for girls of all ages who want to surf on a regular basis and enjoy the opportunity to get to know other girls and to feel a part of a surf team.   As each surfer is able to improve individually, they benefit from the group atmosphere. The group creates the element of fun, team, connectivity and confidence, while the coaches are there to instill the fundamentals. The coach will oversee the group collectively; but  focus on the skills and improvement of each individual surfer.

Bring: Board, wetsuit, leash, water, towel, basically your own beach gear

Type of Board: All types of boards are welcome in the beginner club and may be suggested at the assessment. Each participant is responsible for their own board/equipment

Wetsuit: during the winter we suggest a 4’3 so your kids will stay comfortable in the water and not get out early during their 1.5 hr practice time. During spring and summer many kids will continue to wear a 3’2 so they can stay in during the entire 1.5 hr session.

BEGINNER SKILL SETS AND FOCUS DURING THE LESSON
  • Surfers will stretch and warm up before practice
  • Surfers will be introduced to a variety of tides, conditions and other conditions of surfing.
  • Surfers will learn proper proper pop-up technique and suitable stance for their body type and style
  • Surfers will be coached on proper paddle technique, and encourage to paddle throughout practice.
  • The coach will help surfers get onto the face waves, as well as be encouraged to independently catch waves, or whitewash. This entails board control, timing of the wave, wave knowledge, and coordination.
SKILLS NEEDED BEFORE MOVING TO INTERMEDIATE
  • Able to paddle to the outside on a 2-3ft day with the club and coach (coach still paddles out at this stage).
  • Able to duck-dive or turtle roll (depending on the type of board).
  • Able to get up almost every time on face waves when they are paddling in or being pushed in.
  • Starting to paddle into face waves on your own.
  • Surfer can ride down the line/face of the wave in the appropriate direction.
